Ecuadoran Peasants Launch Protest
BBC World Service
Wednesday, 26 July, 2000

"Peasants organisations throughout Ecuador are holding two days of protests against government plans to privatize the country's social security system.

One of the protest leaders Jose Encalada told the BBC that demonstrators have blocked roads in the east and south of the country. They are also asking the Ecuadorean government to implement alternative reforms, which will not involve social security funds being administered by private organisations.

Correspondents say the protests appear to mark a new period of social unrest, six months after President Gustavo Noboa came to power. His predecessor, Jamil Mahuad, was forced from office after a similar, intense period of anti-government demonstrations."
