"...Dear
colleagues, we all know SAP (Structural Adjustment Programme) and
we all remember what SAP have done to our economy today in Africa.
A lot of innocent children have been sent to their sudden grave as
a result of hunger and poverty, many of our young children dropped
out from schools as a result of exorbitant fees as recommended by
the IMF. Most families are left
with no jobs because of the mass retrenchment that are faithfully
implemented by their collaborators in accordance with IMF order. Social
services were cut down; recreational facilities and higher education
are now exclusively reserved for the privilege few in the society..."

Sydney - Carnival for Global Justice!
"With that corporate freakshow - the Olympics - in town, we should
attract a bit of attention with actions throughout at the day and a
carnival in Victoria Park - cnr City Rd and Broadway (venue to be confirmed).
Victoria Park is the site of the Aboriginal Tent Embassy; a convergance
point for Indigenous activists and supporters who will be protesting
the Olympic Games (meet there @ 10am, 15/9 - opening ceremony!). C.A.C.T.U.S.
fully supports the Aboriginal protests at the Olympics that demand human
rights and dignity for Aboriginal people. Our conservative Government
has shamed us all with their refusal to acknowledge our genocidal, colonial
past (and present) and the Olympics will give us a chance to bring this
struggle to the world.
The s26 Carnival will focus on debt related issues and the struggle
against capitalism and corporate globalisation in the third world. It
will feature bands, DJ's, speakers, food, creative workshops, direct
action workshops, talking circles and whatever else we can organise
(i.e contact us - we need help!). Come one, come all! Let the resistance
be as global as capital!
Good luck to all our comrades in Praha!"

"Mobilisation in Austria is running on full speed. We have hired
a bus that is going to fill up. We are concentrating on the mobilisation
and are trying to push the topic Prague. Although the mass media are
still silent we have got a very good mood here. We built up a cooperation
with parts of the Green Party, the Young Socialists (spo), unemployment
initiatives and feminist movement. Now some media are getting interested
in the topic. We gave interviews to somebody from fm4 - a young people
radio station and to somebody from Profil which is one of the three
big weekly magazines. We built 4 komitees which are slowly changing
into socialist groups, because beeing against capitalism needs to have
an alternative. We are trying to bring up the topic IMF, WTO and the
Worldbank in the weekly demonstrations against the governement, the
fpo and haider that are still continuing. There are a lot of people
who are not just against the governement but also see the problem of
global capitalism and are very interested in acting. Last week we showed
the video "Showdown in Seattle" in front of the top scene location.
It was fascinating - we got a much better response than we ever hoped
to get. We sold about 90 newspapers covering the events in Prague, 14
broshures, got 24 telephone numbers of interested people and could get
a lot of them to join our meeting where we were discussing "Is there
an alernative to global capitalism?". We all are looking forward to
stop the bosses of the world in Prague!

Colombian Black
Communities Process
There will also be two representatives in Prague.
The situation in Colombia is getting worse every single day, especially
since the US congress approved funding for the machiavelian Colombia
Plan. The region where the PCN works, which is a very special region
in many ways (it has the highest density of biodiversity in the world,
it is populated by free communities of people who were slaves for the
global economy until very recently and some indigenous peoples), was
free of drugs, paramilitaries and violence until very recently. However,
since Clinton gave green light to the transfer of funds bypassing the
human rights conditionalities of the plan approved by the congress,
the paramilitaries have been killing people (mass random killings in
communities that happen to be on their way) as they please. The PCN
makes a direct connection between what is happening to them now and
the globalisation imposed by the IMF and the World Bank, since the reason
why they are being killed is that, after massive grassroots mobilisations,
they won the right to territorial autonomy in the new constitution of
1991, meaning that they have the right to determine what is done and
what is not done in their territory (like indigenous peoples). But their
region has become very attractive to national and multinational capital
in the last years due to the wood, the gold, the oil, the biodiversity,
the possibilities to build transport infrastructure to connect the Colombian
economy better with the Pacific Ocean, the possibility to build dams
in that slim strip of land between the Andes and the ocean where tremendous
rivers flow, etc. The colombian state knows that the best way to bypass
the right of people to decide for themselves is to send the paramilitaries
to kill everybody in a few villages in the region to be cleared for
capital, so that people get scared, leave the area and join the slums
of Bogota, Cali or Medellin. There are more than 2 million internal
refugees in Colombia, and thanks to the US funding to the Colombia plan,
their number will surely rapidly grow. These two representatives have
come to denounce all this and to make clear that for them the policies
of the World Bank and the IMF are just one more component of the complex
system of oppression and exploitation that they have been suffering
since centuries, and whose latest manifestation is the Colombia Plan.

to the EU), so maybe an early morning critical mass that might suceed
in closing down (by preventing access etc) locally based TNC's. we also
have aspirations of linking with local communities and holding a carnival
in celebration of our diversity in oppression - the CODO Carnival, st.
pauls we hope, and hulme?, and brixton?, tottenham?, chapel town? etc..
this carnival co-inciding with prague 26. maybe even a squat cafe through
the week, daily themed once more. maybe highlighting instances of corporate
capitalisms abuses based on those themes. human rights? animal/environmental
rights? democratic rights day? etc. in bristol we hope to link thrughout
the south west, to see if we can bring about similtaneous events/actions,
that once in a while regionalise. ie. critical masses in bristol, taunton,
exeter, bath etc.. as well as linking regionally with say London and

Finnish anarchist/autonomist

have decided to participate in Prague anti-IMF/WB mobilisations around
September 26th. It seems we will organise common transport for all groups
involved. Probably at least Left Youth, Socialist League and KEPA (big
NGO coalition working on Third World/development issues) will also join
mobilisation some way and we will try to further broaden
base of mobilisation. There will probably also be some kind of media
office to translate information about IMF/WB actions to Finnish and
feed it to media and internet. Possibly some kind of local actions/discussions
will also be organised around S26 in Finland, at least in Helsinki.

South African Prague Delegation
A superb Southern African delegation (at least half a dozen activists)
is coming as well, mainly from the very progressive Jubilee 2000 South
Africa movement and regional allies. Perhaps I could take this chance
to point out that the Chair of the Board of Governors of the IMF/WB
this year is Trevor Manuel, South Africa's finance minister. He will
be giving an initial speech to the official meetings, as well as taking
part in a debate with Walden Bello from Focus plus Wolfy/Havel. He's
bad news, so beware! But opposing Manuel will be Trevor Ngwane (rasta@pixie.co.za),
the famous Soweto city councilor fired by the ruling African National
Congress for fighting Johannesburg water privatisation (he and Oscar
Oliviera of Seis Federaciones del Tropico de Cochabamba had a lot of
fun comparing notes on resistance strategies/tactics on A17 when I saw
them in a Washington DC coffeehouse after the action on Pennsylvania
Ave ebbed). Trevor N and Oscar, as well as the excellent Soweto-based
student activist Molly Dhlamini, are going on from Prague to do a multi-city
US tour promoting the World Bank Bond Boycott (http://www.worldbankboycott.org
), which will include the cult film "Two Trevors go to Washington" (go

Movement for Global Resistance - "
Facing the apparent indestructability of this unjust and unsolidary
system it is very important that we stay united resisting and fighting
for the fall of the existing structures which generate inequality. They
want to trick us telling us how good everything is; they want to make
us see that this is the only way for the wellbeing of the world; but
in spite of their media-offensive we know perfectly well that in manifestations
like those in Seattle, Washington, Prague or the one we will set up
in Catalonia we make the foundations of the system shiver."

early in Turkiye. On August 30th 2000, an IMF delegation will pay a
visit to Ankara to investigate the progress of the IMF Structural Adjustments
being implemented by the Turkish Government since the beginning of this
year. The Ankara Initiative Against Globalization (AIAG) is organizing
a warm welcome party for the IMF delegation. This welcome party will
take place on August 31, 2000. Call it A31 if you like. AIAG is also
planning a demonstration in Ankara on September 26 to join the Global
Action Day that will take place around the globe. Further, TMMOB (The
Union of Chambers of Engineering and Architecture of Turkiye) is preparing
another day of protests to take place on September 24. AIAG was called
by the boards of Tum Sosyal Sen (The Public Employees Union of the Ministry
of Labour and Social Security and the Social Security Sector), Enerji
Yapi Yol Sen (The Energy, Building and Road Construction Workers Union)
and by Tayfun Gorgun, the Ankara representative of DISK (The Revolutionary
Workers Unions Confederation), and held their first meeting on August
10 2000. Since then many labor/public employees unions, environmental
groups, students, peasants and individuals joined the initiative. A
comprehensive list, in Turkish, of the participants of AIAG can be found

Prag 2000 Inisiyatifi
(Prague 2000 Initiative)
"Hi, Our campaign for S26 is running quite well. There are three
Prag 2000 initiatives set up in Turkey in Ankara, Istanbul and Izmir.
There is a great interest of people on streets towards this campaign.
One of the reasons is that the current government of Turkey is implementing
an economic "reform package" pushed by IMF and World Bank.
It is therefore rather easy to link S26 to the daily life of people
besides other political subjects on the agenda in Turkey such as to
the peace process relating the Kurdish question, government's attacks
on jail issues (it has been far more money invested to build new jails
than the money allocated for public services), membership issue of Turkey
to the EU and overall to the presence of fascists in the government.
It is rather difficult to send people to Prag due to visa and financial
problems. We will send a delegation. It will be around 100-150 people
from all over Turkey. We have therefore concentrated us on local activities
and meetings..." Read more news from Turkey.

Ukraine
Initiative Tigra Nigra
"We in Kiev
are planning not so big events, but at least something for S26. We are
small initiative group called 'Initiative "tigra nigra"', created
from various people and based on non-authoritarian principles. Because
of lack of human and other means we can only try to cover Kiev - not
the whole Ukraine. Events planned in Kiev are:
1) Informational campaign: despite the role played by IMF/WB in ukrainian
policy and current situation, people are uninformed about these institutions'
activity's type and impacts. The serious lack of critical analysis and
simply information;
2) Two street actions, every with elements of the street theatre: for
26th in front of World Bank office in Kiev, and for 25th in front of
Czech embassy in preventive protest against possible oppression of demos
in Prague by riot police.
There is a serious shortage of everything, so agenda can be changed,
but the most essential part anyway remain planned."

Chicago
" As you know, on September 26th there will be global protests
to coincide with the Annual General Meeting of the Board of Governors
of the IMF and World Bank in Prague, the Czech Republic.
There are several events happening in Chicago: 12:00AM: Steelworkers
confront Harris Bank and Puppet show 2:00PM: S26 Collective Rally and
March, beginning at NikeTown 4:00PM: Chicago Mayday Coalition March
on the Financial District
A constant IMF/World Bank prescription for countries where they operate
is increasing "labor market flexibility." In practice this means opposing
increases in the minimum wage, weakening trade unions and workers' bargaining
power and opposing any social protections that would make workers less
willing to work for low wages. In the U.S., working people face similar
campaigns to erode their power. Thousands of workers are fired each
year by American employers for joining together to organize unions.
1,000 Steelworker families are still standing united on picket lines
in Des Moines, Iowa and Natchez, Mississippi. They have courageously
stood up for their rights against Titan International's series of labor
law violations, scabs(non-union replacement workers), and attacks upon
their families.
Tuesday, September 26th, striking steelworkers will rally at Harris
Bank in Chicago in solidarity with demonstrations against the IMC/World
Bank Meeting in Prague.
Meet at 12 Noon Harris Bank 111 West Monroe Street Chicago, Illinois
Why demonstrate against Harris Bank? Titan International continues to
hold out against the National Labor Relations Board, Courts, OSHA rulings
and union/community solidarity, for only one reason: an immoral $175
million dollar loan from Chicago based Harris Bank.
The United Steel Workers of America, various international unions and
solidarity organizations are demonstrating against corporate sponsored
injustice on S26.

issues of social justice and peace. For the past three years, we have
been touring plays on issues of nuclear disarmament, peace, and environmental
issues. Last year, one of our plays was produced at The Hague Appeal
for Peace. We are bringing two plays to Prague: ON THE GRID (a play
about the way IMF uses 'aid' to steal from developing countries and
force barter-based agricultural economies into monetarism), and A GOOD
DAY TO PIE (a play about genetically engineered food and the way corporations
are committing acts of 'biopiracy' while forcing untested products on
consumers). We will be holding a fundraiser in NY on September 10--call

State College
Pennsylvania
"Some of us at Penn State are moving our classrooms through the
sidewalks of campus hoping to stimulate others along the way. We are
calling this floating classroom a “March for Democracy” because we want
to discuss what we see as the perverted marriage between political representatives
and corporate leaders—a marriage unseen and unsanctioned by the people.
The march will begin with a brief lecture and will be punctuated by
similar talks throughout its route. Several of us have already decided
to walk our nearly 400 students through campus on this day because these
ideas have become too important to lock inside our classrooms. Open
air may be the only “air time” that we can get for now. 12:30 - 2:15
p.m."
